Dancing Beyond Borders

From Ghana to Lebanon, South Africa, and now Kenya, DanceWorks is committed to bringing the gift of dance to children around the world.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of traveling to children’s hospitals, refugee camps, churches, townships, schools, and communities facing great hardship, where dance becomes a bridge to creativity, connection, hope, and love.

No matter where I go, I am always moved by the openness, trust, pure joy, and generosity that children so freely share. It reminds me, time and time again, that dance truly is a universal language.

One of the greatest joys of these experiences has been sharing them with members of our DanceWorks faculty. Taylor Carey joined me in South Africa, and this summer Nell Conway will be joining me in Kenya. I am thrilled to share these experiences with select members of our staff and witness the life-changing growth we all experience together.

Every day brings impromptu creativity, technical growth, laughter, and meaningful human connection. These experiences continue to reinforce what I have always believed: when we step onto the dance floor, we are one. Economic status, distance, culture, religion, and politics simply melt away. What remains is kindness, compassion, and the joy of moving together.

I truly believe dance nurtures every child mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Watching children discover confidence, expression, and belonging through movement is one of life’s greatest blessings. It is equally rewarding to witness how these experiences transform the teachers who are fortunate enough to share them.

Although our DanceWorks students will remain here at home in our studios, they, too, will benefit from these global experiences. I look forward to bringing these lessons home and encouraging our dancers to explore the world with open hearts, open minds, love, support, and community. These are the values that make DanceWorks so very special.

As registration opened on August 1st, it feels especially meaningful that while we are welcoming families into a brand-new dance season here at home, Nell and I will be sharing the joy of dance with children in Kenya. What a beautiful reminder that no matter where we are in the world, we are all connected through movement.
